Varvara Pilipenko (ワルワラ・ピリペンコ, Waruwara Piripenko) is the Anti-Demon Corps' 8th Unit Chief.

Appearance

Varvara is a cute foreign young woman with long blonde hair braided on the left side of her hair and green eyes, she has a red hair ornament above the braid.

She wears a variation of the Anti-Demon Corps' uniform that consists of a long dress skirt with an open back slit and is complimented with a beret.

Personality

Compared to the other Chiefs, Varvara is rather impassive and quiet, not speaking or reacting the entire time during the Chief Meeting, even when the others was competing for the position of the next Commander. After finding out about her parents criminal activities she became cold and distant to others, lamenting over the fact that she would inherit their business. Upon training with Kyouka after joining the Anti-Demon Corps she became a little more approachable to the people around her.

Background

Varvara's childhood

Varvara was originally born to a high ranking couple in the Russian mafia. Both her parents specifically ran an operation that stole peaches from Mato and imported them into Russia while her mother, the leader of the organization, was a peach user who went by the nickname "The Boreal Witch," protected their assets. They also had Varvara eat a peach herself which resulted in her gaining her powers. One day, she was approached by Ren Yamashiro, who informed her that she had destroyed her parents entire operation and made her an offer to join the Mato defense corp, an option she preferred as she did not want to use her abilities for evil.

Varvara agreed and was put in Kyouka's Seventh Unit until she was promoted as a chief of her own. During her time with the Seventh Unit, Varvara developed a deep admiration for Kyouka due to her honest personality and passionate lifestyle despite the destruction of her hometown.

Powers and Abilities

Overview

Like all other women, Varvara attained a unique power having devoured one of the peaches from Mato. As one of the Anti-Demon Corps' Chiefs, she is much more powerful than normal Demon Hunters and as such is one of the strongest women in the organization. Befitting the 8th Unit Chief, Varvara has the highest authority among the 8th Unit above the Vice Chief.

Peach Blessing

Pantheon (高遠なる大聖堂(パンテオン), Panteon, lit. "Noble Cathedral"): Varvara's unique power, at first, manifesting a space of emptiness that grants her an advantage against those caught within it, conjuring a dark mass which grabs onto opponents. After joining the Anti-Demon Corps and meeting Kyouka Uzen, Pantheon evolved, manifesting a literal cathedral, which can cause effects depending on the relations between everyone inside the cathedral and Kyouka:

1. Praise: If everyone present in the cathedral holds a certain amount of respect for Kyouka, the cathedral will heal and recover all those inside of it.
2. Sermon: If there is anyone present who doesn't know a sufficient amount about Kyouka, all forms of conflict will be prohibited for 1 hour. (Which usually includes a lecture about Kyouka courtesy of Varvara).
3. Paladins: If there is anyone present who dislikes Kyouka, everyone that does hold positive feeling towards Kyouka will gain an increase in power everytime they show an act of virtue. Also, Varvara can grant all allies within the cathedral an extra ability.
4. Holy War: If there is anyone present who blasphemes Kyouka's good name to an egregious extent, Pantheon's miraculous power will intensify and the statue of Kyouka will come to life for the sole purpose smiting the offender. This ability was originally slated to be so devastating that even Varvara couldn't put it into words.

The cathedral also acts as a separate space, with Varvara controlling who and who isn't summoned into the Cathedral. Also, when inside the cathedral, Varvara gain Cryokinesis, allowing her to single-handedly fight with Fukuma.

• Komainu (無窮の鎖(スレイブ)・狛(こま)犬(いぬ), Sureibu: Komainu, lit. "Eternal Chain: Guardian Dog"): The Slave Form, which Yuuki assumes after Varvara, acting as his Master adopts a fully armored and mechanical appearance, with smooth metallic texture and a long tail. Using Komainu allows Yuuki to produce a barrier that burns shuuki but also comes with offensive capabilities like using his tail as a whip and detaching his fists into a rocket punch. Yuuki notes that this form feels slow and Varvara believes its power is determined by Yuuki's loyalty to Kyouka.
  • Light of Atonement (つみほろぼしのひかり(罪滅光), Tsugunai no Hikari, lit. "Atonement Light"): Komainu's most powerful attack which shoots out an orb that eliminates all evil beings while not affecting normal humans.

Physical Abilities

Immense Endurance: Despite her soft appearance, Varvara is extremely resilient. She can take on brutal slashes and continue to engage in battle, eventually managing to defeat the Thunder God Fukuma.

• Her first name means "Stranger/Foreigner".
  • Her first name is the Slavic equivalent of Barbara.
  • Her surname comes from the Ukrainianized Greek name "Pilip" (Philip in English).
• She is the only non-Japanese chief of the Anti-Demon Corps and most of her 8th Unit's members appear to be of foreign descent.
