Ren Yamashiro (山城 恋(やましろ れん), Yamashiro Ren) is the Chief of the Anti-Demon Corps' 10th Unit and a major supporting character of the Mato Seihei no Slave anime/manga series.

Revered by her allies as the apex of humanity, Ren not only commands the 10th Unit but also holds the position of Head Commander of the entire organization and is considered to be their strongest weapon.

Appearance

Ren is a beautiful young woman with purple hair that has a ribbon on the left side of her hair with square bangs hanging on the right side and violet eyes.

She is dressed in the usual Anti-Demon Corps uniform, shorts instead of a skirt, black tights, white gloves and a cloak and high-heeled boots.

Personality

Both Tenka and Kyouka have described Ren as a patriotic Demon Hunter, doing whatever it takes to defend her homeland ranging from eliminating both Aoba and all the other Humanoid Shuuki who reside in the Hidden Village and working closely with the Prime Minister of Japan to ensure peace.

As noted by Kyouka, Ren is an incredibly curious person. Once she takes an interest in someone or something, it is ill-omen which was noted when Yuuki first made contact with her for the first time. She would find excuses just to spend time with that thing, best seen with the head of the 3rd Unit who was reduced to become her plaything. Kyouka has also noted that Ren tends to treat her curiosities as toys, something to be used acording to her whims whenever she feels like using them. That Yuuki has piqued her interest has frustrated both Kyouka and Tenka. She is also very sharp in her observations of other people and will notice the smallest change in a person's demeanor such as when she inquires to Mira if Tenka has been acting differently due to the latter's discreet investigation of the Anti-Demon Corps' scientific research.

Due to her upbringing, Ren has a strong belief in proving herself superior to others, as well as doing whatever it takes to ensure that people fear her, relishing in the difference between hers and their strengths. She has never met an opponent she is unable to defeat, or had any noted hardship of any kind, finding most things in academics and sports easy to achieve. Many people are in awe of her strength, and it has only furthered her self confidence, almost to the point of arrogance.

Despite her refined looks and demeanour, Ren is shown often to favour using brute force and fear when things do not go her way. The transformation of Yuuki Killer Fang indicates that beneath her refinement is deep malevolence and wrath against any who stand in her way or make her look incompetent. Her fearsome punishments seem to have traumatized, Bell, the Chief of the Third Division, due to Ren's consistent harsh training regarding Bell's failures. Ren's brutality comes out in full when someone refuses to submit to her strength, and is amplified due to a perceived lack of control. Her biggest target turned into Yuuki Wakura after his Killer Fang transformation showed a similar desire to ignore being controlled and began fighting against her, referring him as both a "Bad Dog" and "Beast". She continued using physical force, and almost killed him, after realizing that Yuuki could also regenerate in that Slave Form.

Intelligence, logic, and strength have made her formidable but her sense of power has also made Ren reckless in certain situations. When Kyouka tried warning her about the dangers of the Killer Fang and the rewards she would pay, she ignored them, opting for practical tests to sate her curiosity. Upon understanding how Yuuki obtained his "rewards," and the intimacy they can entail, which included being disrobed and giving kisses; she became embarassed and humiliated, considering the rewards base and beastly. Due to her upbringing, she has had little to no experience with intimacy or having to submit to the whims of another, and by the time she was finished with the experience, she feels so humiliated that she destroys a mountain out of frustration. Her strong feelings of humiliation, shame, and lack of control during the reward, have resulted in her developing a vindictive fixation on Yuuki and a sharp focus on making him submit to her will. She even purchased a dog collar to put on him, to remind him how she towers over all others. She is also beyond stubborn in this goal, even though she can easily humiliate Yuuki by forcing him to be her dog, she still thinks it is not enough of a punishment. Ren has stated that she wants Yuuki to submit when she is giving the reward, or it does not feel like a triumph.

Ren's recklessness and arrogance would come into play again when Shikoku meets with her to negotiate the Thunder Gods "surrender". While Ren considered Shikoku's offer a trap, she believes she can crush any trap the Gods can make and decides to accept because their offer to share Mato's resources aligns with her personal goals. Shikoku pointed out Ren is too powerful for her own good and ends up underestimating her opponents.

She is also fond of animals, most notably dogs, which Ren stated Yuuki reminded her of, he, in turn, stated that she reminded him of his older sister in spite of them looking different from one another.

Background

Though most of her past is unknown, Ren stated that she was fond of looking at maps from remote regions. She had an upbringing where she succeeded in anything and everything that she did, ranging from mock exams, sports competitions, student council.

Having eating a Peach from Mato, receiving powerful abilities, causing a previous female President to state that Ren was life's apex and earth's answer.

Powers and Abilities

Ren was regarded as a genius from childhood who succeeded in everything that she did ranging from academics and sports without failing. Similar to all other woman before her, she gained a unique power after devouring one of the Peaches from Mato. After joining the Anti-Demon Corps, Ren has been described as being the apex of life, as well as Earth's answer by several people despite not using her full powers. The Eight Thunder Gods recognize Ren as the biggest threat to them among the humans. Shikoku considers Ren powerful enough to survive their plan that could wipe out humanity.

As Chief of the 10th Unit and Commander of the Anti-Demon Corps, she has supreme authoritative rule over the 10th Unit and all the other nine units, even among the Chiefs who leads them. Ren is also noted to be superior in strength among the other Chiefs, being able to overpower Yuuki in his Killer Fang without getting serious. Furthermore, she was able to easily beat down both Kyouka and Yuuki at the same time while still holding back, despite Yuuki receiving strength from the Thunder Gods within him.

Peach Blessing

Ren's Vairocana.

Vairocana (万物を総該した無限宇宙の全一(ベアローキャナー), Bearōkyanā, lit. "The Infinite Universe That Makes Up All of Creation"): Her Peach Blessing, which allows her to use the abilities of all eight Buddhas depending on the mandalas that are placed on her pupils, in addition to a manifesting a light ring, which has several cards circling all around her. Ren can activate her two abilities at the same time, as well as being the only one who knows what all her abilities are. She is afforded flight and levitation, being able to make her chair float and covering vast speeds in seconds; releasing shockwaves from kicking; negating other Peach Blessings; and teleporting people vast distances, such as the bottom of a distant sea, but unlike Tenka's ability, she cannot use it on herself. However, even this ability can’t negate the “rewards” requirement to use the “Slave” ability.

• Killer Fang (無窮の鎖(スレイブ)・殺(ころし)牙(きば), Sureibu: Koroshi Kiba, lit. "Eternal Chain: Killer Fang"): The Slave Form, which Yuuki entered after Ren acted as his Master, which Kyouka stated was a dangerous form that she hadn't seen before. This form allowing him to instantly kill several Shuuki in a single strike. Despite its offensive power, he fights in a more berserk manner and would even go against the person riding on top of him.. It is likely more demonic than previous forms due to Ren's more cruel personality polluting him compared to other riders having more pure emotions.
  • Sacrificial Goat (贖(しょく)罪(ざい)の山羊(やぎ), Shokuzai no Yagi, lit. "Atonement Goat"): This is a special technique, where Yuuki causes countless symbols featuring fangs appearing above his intended target's heads by flashing his eyes, after that he make a bite which causes all their upper bodies to explode as if they'd all been bitten. However, the attack can be stopped if Yuuki is prevented from closing his mouth.

Physical Abilities

Immense Strength: Ren has immense strength above what her feminine build suggests. With even the simplest moves such as beating or slapping her opponents, she could decimate, if not killing them using a couple of blows. As a testament to her strength, she was capable of trading blows with Yuuki in his Killer Fang state without using Vairocana to the point of beating him to a pulp before he regenerated. She can easily overwhelm two Thunder Gods with her strength alone in which the other God is also known for her immense strength (albeit the two Gods seemed to be not serious).

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Ren, in addition to her strength has impressive speed and reflexes, is capable of deflecting bullets fired at close proximity using a single hand. When Yuuki, in his Killer Fang form used Sacrificial Goat against her, she instantly closed the gap between them and incapacitated him before the technique took place. She can take on two Thunder Gods at the same time and overwhelming them with her speed which forced them to retreat.

Master Martial Artist: Ren is an extremely capable fighter. Using her tremendous speed and strength, she is capable of dealing lethal kicks and punches to knock down her opponents. While fighting Kyouka, a hand-to-hand combat specialist, Ren was able to dodge and counter every one of her blows.

Trivia

• Her first name Ren (恋) means "Love".
  • Her surname Yama (山) means "Mountain" and shiro (城) means "castle", meaning "Mountain Castle". Yamashiro(山城国) was an ancient administrative division in southern Kyoto. It was the political, economic and cultural centre of Japan from the 8th century when the capital was located in Kyoto.
• Ren purchased a dog collar with the intention to put it on Yuuki, making him her "dog".
• Ren's hobbies is playing with her dog (Kaname & Miyabi) and walking in quiet and harmonious places (like Japanese garden).
• Ren's favorite subject at school were history and geography, she loves dog and Java sparrows (and other kinds of birds), she watches a lot of videos.
• Ren thinks of Bell as a friend and companion and whenever she's in a good mood, she starts humming old hits.
