Information

Rairen (雷煉(らいれん), Rairen) is one of the Hachiraishin, consisting of the so-called Gods who rule over the Shuuki.

Appearance[]

Rairen is a tall and stocky humanoid Shuuki, standing taller than Jouryuu. Unlike her and Shikoku, he appears less human, instead having a far more humanoid Shuuki appearance, with what looks to be an almost gold mask-like face in the manga, white on the anime series.

He is often seen to be dressed in more Japanese battle-styled clothing with the left side being black and the right being white. He wears long sleeves, gauntlets, black chest armor with a series of white outlines, and a half-black-half-white hat.

Personality[]

Listen, you obsolete bunch! Your disposal is nigh!

–Rairen's declaration.

Rairen is a confident and arrogant warmongering individual, often proposing plans including violent combat best seen as he was leading an entire fleet of Shuuki to the 7th Unit, where the Mato Exhibition Games were being held.[1] He also has a great deal of pride in his strength, believing himself to be capable of handling the Chiefs, whom he believes are also obsolete compared to them.[2] Rairen maintains this belief even after witnessing the true power of Tenka, who almost overpowered him and almost killed him using one of her techniques before Shikoku saved him. Despite this, he still believed he could have continued fighting.[3]

He believes all humans, including the women of the Anti-Demon Corps, are beneath the Hachiraishin, and wishes to finish them off as soon as possible. He has demanded that Shikoku not refer to themselves as "people", since it put them in the same category as Humans.[4][5] However, it ended up being his arrogant and understimating Humans and thus the women of the Anti-Demon Corps that ended up with him being defeated in the end by Bell Tsukiyono, whose presence he didn't even register.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overview[]

Being one of the Eight Thunder Gods, Rairen is one of the eight strongest beings in Mato. As a testament to this, he was able to almost overpower two Vice-Chiefs Himari and Yachiho Azuma; the former would've been almost killed if Yachiho hadn't rewound time, while the latter continued fighting for a time before being almost defeated.

Shuuki Powers[]

Fire and Thunder Manipulation: Rairen has control over fire and thunder, being able to breathe fire and release thunderbolts from his hands or from clouds above.

Immense Strength: As a member of the Eight Thunder Gods, Rairen is incredibly strong. An example can be shown where he destroyed Ginna's special barrier with a single headbutt. He is also capable of fighting against Tenka for some time before being overwhelmed.

Immense Durability: Rairen has shown to be monstrously durable. Withstanding not only Tenka's punch but also from Kuusetsu's enhanced form with no visible injuries. He tanked all the attacks from the 7th Unit, not even the Great Cross Edge from Kyouka and Yuuki's slave form managed to wound him in the slightest.

Transformation: Same as most of the Eight Thunder Gods, Rairen can assume another powered-up form referred to as his true form, surpassing that of Kuusetsu. If forced, he can assume a gigantic form, where he resembles a demonic monster with eyes on his chest, shoudler, and one on top of his head.

Trivia[]

  • His name Rairen appears to be a portmanteau of Rai (雷) meaning "Thunder" and Ren (煉) meaning "Kneading over fire", both of which reference his power over thunder and fire.
  • Among the thunder gods, Rairen seems to represent Hono-ikazuchi (火雷, Fiery Thunder), coming from Izanami's breasts and embodying the flame of lightning, in reference to his fire- and lightning-based powers.
  • Rairen is the second major male character in the entire series and the first male antagonist.
  • He also has an androgynous voice.
