Kyouka and Yumeji (京香と夢路, Kyōka to Yumeji) is the ninety-eighth chapter of the Mato Seihei no Slave manga.
Summary[]
A flashback shows Kyouka Uzen's initiation into the 7th Unit where she declares to Yumeji Shimomura and Haruno Kue that her dream is to eliminate all Shuuki. Yumeji is impressed by Kyouka's eyes and gives her a cigarette lighter as a gift. Kyouka says she is not old enough to smoke, but Yumeji clarifies that it is a tool for them to bond. Yumeji places a cigarette in her mouth and, understanding, Kyouka lights it for her. Yumeji heartily welcomes Kyouka into the 7th unit, declaring that she will "feast" upon many Shuuki and that Yumeji will train her up good.
Sometime later, Kyouka and Haruno attack a hoard of Shuuki (with Haruno using her Origami ability), while Yumeji watches approvingly.
Later on, while the three are bathing, Kyouka is surprised to hear that Yumeji has recommended her for the position of Vice Chief, despite her relative inexperience. Haruno happily approves of the suggestion. Yumeji commends Mato as a great place where a newbie like Kyouka can become Vice Chief and a person like her who lived in a ditch can become Chief.
Later, after Nei Ookawamura has joined the unit, Yumeji looks over a report that shows the 7th Unit's Shuuki kill count has increased even more, becoming the highest among the units. She is delighted, believing this will allow her to aim for a position higher than Chief.
Sometime later, Kyouka protests to Yumeji about the increased pace at which they are hunting Shuuki as it is tiring out both Haruno and Nei. Yumeji counters that their kill count will be overtaken if they let up and that Kyouka should put her back into if she wishes to protect everyone and eliminate the Shuuki. Kyouka persists and Yumeji suggests that they have a contest of power the "7th Unit way" with the loser leaving the Anti-Demon Corps forever, believing this will get Kyouka to back down. However, to Yumeji's surprise, Kyouka takes her up on the offer as she refuses to let the 7th Unit collapse.
Back in the present, Kyouka faces down the injured Yumeji who says the reason she lost to her was because she wasn't willing to kill her. However, Kyouka believes that the reason Yumeji lost was because she underestimates other people, citing her battle with Konomi Tatara as proof. Yumeji concedes that Kyouka may be right as she had every intention of killing Konomi.
Kyouka says that, since Yumeji has abandoned her humanity, she cannot hand her over to the police, and so she will take her to Mato instead. Yumeji suggests she is doing so because she knows about the Eight Thunder Gods's hideout, and so requests that she treat her with care. As Kyouka approaches her, Yumeji tells her to stay away or she'll get caught up in the "Gods' Punishment" and asks her to save her. Kyouka asks Yumeji why she joined up with the Gods, knowing that they wish to eliminate humanity, and Yumeji explains that, since the world would not look at her, she would not look at it either.
Yumeji places a cigarette in her mouth, but it unable to light it. To her great surprise, Kyouka lights it with the same lighter she gave her back when she joined the 7th Unit. Kyouka explains she was always looking at Yumeji and that's why she had tried to warn her so many times.
Suddenly, a seal appears on Yumeji's body and she is torn to shreds, the so-called "Gods' Punishment". Yumeji collapses to the ground, but Kyouka picks her back up and declares that if Yumeji could live in a ditch then she should show her her will to live now. Yumeji coughs and Kyouka realizes that she is using her telekinesis to move her organs and keep her alive. Knowing she can't wait for the medical team, Kyouka picks Yumeji up and rushes her to the Onmyou Agency so she can treat her, get information on the Thunder Gods and learn about the agency itself.
