Chapter 142

Great Match is the one-hundred-and-forty-second chapter of the Mato Seihei no Slave manga.

Summary[]

In her Pantheon, Varvara continues to preach the virtues of Kyouka to Konomi, Yakumo, and Fubuki, citing an example in which Kyouka trained a group of Anti-Demon Corps recruits. Fubuki and Yakumo express their concerns about the nature of the sermon and whether Kyouka can get along with the higher-ups, but Varvara assures them in both cases. Varvara then asks Konomi if she will vote for Kyouka, but Konomi is hesitant to respond. Yakumo interjects, stating that, while she is realizing Kyouka's good points, she is more so distracted by the reveal of Varvara's true personality, which Konomi and Fubuka agree with. Varvara is crestfallen that she has apparently failed to convince them.

Later, Varvara apologizes to Kyouka for her failure, but Yuuki and Kyouka reassure her that she at least showed her enthusiasm. Varvara then tells them Ren attempted to bribe her for her vote by promising to release her mother from prison and warns Kyouka that she is facing a dangerous opponent. Kyouka considers that she has not managed to gain any new supporters and thus must make a bold move.

At another election meeting, after confirming Ren's intention to agree to the Thunder Gods' offer to secure Mato's resources, Kyouka challenges her to a one-minute, one round match. Ren is dismissive of the challenge, but Kyouka assures her that both she and the Thunder Gods aren't as weak as Ren thinks. Ren accepts, while the other Chiefs are incredulous of Kyouka's challenge. Tobera observes that Kyouka is attempting to undermine Ren's strength, though it will backfire if Kyouka is defeated instantly.

Later, the match begins with Kyouka riding atop Yuuki in his Skyward form and releasing her limiter. Ren says she will not use her ability nullification under the pretense that the battle is meant to mimic a fight against a Thunder God. Tobera acts as the referee and warns that killing an opponent will be an immediate disqualification. The fight begins with Ren launching herself high into the air. Ren kicks a massive energy blast at Kyouka, but she nullifies it with her and Yuuki's "Slave-Edge Sword" technique. Ren then closes in on Kyouka, but the latter fends her off with her sword. Ren follows up with a powerful punch to Kyouka's shoulder, but Kyouka manages to cut Ren's arm. Mira and Yakumo are surprised, having never seen Ren get injured. Ren reveals one of her abilities and instantly heals herself, which she has never had to do before and impresses the others. Tobera observes that Ren revealed an ability to make up for the fact that she couldn't finish Kyouka off right away. Ren then challenges to fight with Kyouka's specialty, which Kyouka accepts. Yuuki wonders if he could do something to catch Ren offguard while she is distracted with Kyouka. Approximately 40 seconds remain in the match.
