The Third's Chief (三番組組長, San Bangumi Kumichō) is the one-hundred-and-fourth chapter of the Mato Seihei no Slave manga.
Summary[]
Bell Tsukiyono stands before the 7th Unit and Yuuki Wakura expresses his amazement at her Canopus ability. However, a self-doubting Bell replies that a strong enemy would be able to strike back at her as she using the technique. Kyouka Uzen attempts to assure her that she will become stronger by working with other ability users and loudly declares that they will build her confidence with training.
Bell takes part in a series of training sessions with the members of the 7th Unit, but quickly becomes overwhelmed. While jogging with Nei Ookawamura, she collapses and Nei stays behind to help her, assuring her they will both reach the goal.
Afterwards, while bathing in the hot springs, Bell asks Himari Azuma if their training has gotten tougher since her arrival, but Himari obliviously replies that it's actually been lighter than usual, which upsets Bell.
Later, while Yuuki is preparing food in the kitchen, he runs into Bell who appears to be leaving. Bell tells him there was a sudden call from the 3rd Unit, but Ren Yamashiro suddenly appears and grabs Bell, saying she knew she would try to give up. The three sit down for a discussion, and Ren confirms that there was no call from the 3rd Unit and Bell was just trying to escape her training. Ashamed, Bell breaks down and tearfully apologizes, explaining that she felt she couldn't keep up and was bringing the 7th Unit down. Ren then tells Bell to tell Yuuki about her life. Bell is reluctant at first, but does so after Yuuki wipes her tears away.
Bell explains that, as a child, she was bullied at school and neglected by her parents and, thus, always hoped she would get a strong Peach ability. Eventually, her wish was granted, which caught the attention of then-Commander Tobera Azuma who asked her to join the Anti-Demon Corps. Bell soon became overjoyed as her schoolmates and parents began to notice and appreciate her. However, upon joining the Anti-Demon Corps, she soon became overwhelmed by the intimidating strength of the other Chiefs and her self-esteem vanished once more.
Bell concludes by explaining that, thus far, she has just managed to hang in there as Chief, but with the appearance of stronger enemies she feels she can no longer keep up. Yuuki asks Bell if she truly wants to be in the Anti-Demon Corps, and Bell tearfully replies that she wants to stay so she can be liked by everyone. Yuuki grabs Bell's hand and confidently proclaims that they will do their best together, considering to himself that he completely understands her given his own past motives.
